[This review is day two in my 30 Day Book Challenge - my least favourite book]
With Runaways: Rock Zombies it is no hyperbole when I say it is the worst book I have ever read. It is about an evil radio DJ who uses a piece of techno music to turn everyone with plastic surgery into a zombie. It is as ridiculous as it sounds, if not more. Perhaps this would work better as a stand-alone, and not almost directly after an incredibly good 48-issue run.
Miyazawa's art is okay, very manga-inspired. It doesn't do anything original for the comic. Previously, it always had art that was a lot less polished. And even if the comic needed a new artist, it probably needs more surreal art to match its surreal premise-if only for the one arc.
Speaking of, the story would've worked better if it let loose, and revelled in its strange premise. As it is, the comic is still trying to stay grounded in "the real world". Well, as much as possible. Runaways has previously entertained flights of fancy, in any case (there is a genetically-engineered dinosaur that is controlled by one of the characters in it), so this wouldn't be out of the ordinary if Moore had run with it.
